  2. 2History

    History

timeline2It all started with the original John F. Kennedy airport construction in the 1950s. In April 1942, New York City began placing hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands of Idlewild Golf Course. Initial plans were for a modest 1,000-acre airport, but by the time construction was complete, Idlewild Airport had grown to five times that size. Commercial flights began in July 1948 and thus came the need for airport facilities production, construction, renovation, and problem solving – enter VRH. Today, JFK is the nations’ leading international gateway, with more than 80 airlines operating from its gates and VRH continues to be one of their leading contractors.

Through the ensuing decades, we have built the Delta Terminal D at LaGuardia Airport, Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport, the FAA Control Tower at Stewart International Airport, and one of our proudest achievements – the new 1.4 million – square-foot, 36-gate Terminal 8 for American Airlines at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

    Safety

safetyAt VRH, safety starts with a commitment from the top management down to the workers in the field to provide a healthy and safe work environment. All executives, project managers and superintendents have taken the OSHA 30 hour course and employees hired through the various unions must present an OSHA10 hour card at the time of their hiring.

A site-specific safety plan is prepared for each project to include the specific measures that will be taken to ensure worker and public safety. As part of the plan, all workers must watch a safety orientation video and sign an acknowledgement from that they received project specific as well as generic safety training. Records of this training are maintained in the VRH Office Pro System.
